Cloud CyberInfrastructure Innovation Lab

Project Abstract: “Principles of Database Systems” is an upper-level undergraduate course
offered by the Computer Science Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
(UNCG). The objective of the course is that students gain knowledge and practice on relational
database concepts, ranging from conceptual modeling to the implementation of a database in
SQL and the development of a front-end web application to perform create, read, update, and
delete (CRUD) operations. Databases are one of the fundamental concepts of computer science
and are widely regarded as a necessary skill in the most varied academic and professional areas
of computer science. Through a cloud infrastructure, students will be able to exercise not only
the skills necessary to create and maintain their databases, but also be exposed to many technical
aspects that are important in the design, development, and maintenance of database applications,
such as the understanding of data storage and retrieval from a server, the process to connect and
transfer files from a development workstation to the server and the management of web
applications in a Linux operating system environment.
